  • Margin notes: Special Series – Waging war against indwelling sin #8

    June 30th, 2009

warfareProv. 7:21 “With much seductive speech she persuades him; with her smooth talk she compels him. 22 All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a stag is caught fast 23 till an arrow pierces its liver; as a bird rushes into a snare; he does not know that it will cost him his life.”

Waging successful warfare requires as much a knowledge of the Enemy’s tactics as it does skill with our own weapons. Today, I want to look very rapidly at the “much seductive speech” Temptation uses to persuade us to follow her as an ox goes unwittingly to the slaughter. There is a full exposition of it in the 10 verses immediately preceding.

crash and burn“For at the window of my house I have looked out through my lattice, and I have seen among the simple, I have perceived among the youths, a young man lacking sense, passing along the street near her corner, taking the road to her house in the twilight, in the evening, at the time of night and darkness.” (Proverbs 7:6-9, ESV)

Just as we saw last time that our temptations to sin are common to us all – so all of our temptations have common elements to them. Here again, getting some understanding of these matters in a detailed fashion becomes a necessary weapon in waging the battle.

liarOne of the most useful tools put at our disposal in God’s Word for aiding us in the battle against indwelling sin – is the unmasking of Temptation’s tactics in Proverbs 7.

So much of this battle is rooted in argumentation. Our lusts and desires raise arguments for why they ought to be left alone, and indulged when they cry out. We need to understand how seductive and calculating Temptation is. The wisdom of thinking and contemplating regularly, soberly and accurately about Temptation cannot be overstated.

The battle is in the mind. The more right thinking the Believer can get, the more truth we can have at our disposal, the less likely we are to be deceived – even by ourselves. If we are not informed, watching and prepared, we will be sitting ducks.

  • Response to a Jehovah’s Witness

    June 15th, 2009

watchtowerRecently,  I received by mail, a tract and a letter from someone I assume is a Jehovah’s Witness. The tract was printed by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Also included was a lovely handwritten note from a gal who failed to include her last name.

Rather than simply trashing it, I decided it might be good to respond.  I thought some might perhaps be interested in my response.

Please note – all Biblical references are marked “NWT” for the New World Translation” – which is the Watchtower Society’s official version of the Bible.

  • Memoirs of an Ordinary Pastor – A Brief Review.

    May 25th, 2009

memoirs“Memoirs of an Ordinary Pastor” is a war story. It has the cast about it that all war stories do. Bitter-sweetness pervades. There is tragedy. And there is no “jump up and shout” victory.

This is the kind of war story that chronicles the unsung heroes. The ones stationed at the lonely, desolate outposts. They never charge up the hill. They are not the ones who throw themselves on the explosives in front of their comrades to take the impact so that others live to tell about it. The don’t get decorated. At least not here.

  • Margin Notes: Special Series – Waging war against indwelling sin #5 – Guest blog!

    May 19th, 2009

slipping-away-hrIn continuing through this series – it is my hope that not simply the material, but presenting it different ways and giving emphasis here and there and especially opening up an area more by others will be of additional help. Today is one of those “opening up” places with guest blogger – Scott Ferguson. How sin loses its grip progressively over time is one of the most encouraging things we can hear. Here’s how he describes it.

    May 15th, 2009

victoryIn prosecuting the “Every Believer’s Battle” against the influence of indwelling sin – we need to know, and rehearse regularly some foundational principles.

    1. We must never forget – This is war.

    2. We must never forget – Sin doesn’t die.

    3. We must never forget – God has designed and decreed your victory.

Never is that third principle more important than in the immediate aftermath of some particular failure.
