February Readings #5

Walk in Wisdom – Gleanings from Scripture

Today’s Readings Feb. #5 : Matt. 12:22-37; Acts 17:16-34; Psalm 28; Ex. 13-15

Ex. 13:17 is wonderfully instructive: “When Pharaoh let the people go, God did
not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near. For
God said, “Lest the people change their minds when they see war and return to
Egypt.” It is often the case as we grow in Christ, as we walk with Him longer and
longer, to find ourselves in fiercer battles than we ever imagined when we were
first saved. It seems mysterious and confusing. But here, the mercy and the
wisdom of God in His dealings with us are seen to be most beautiful. For though
we – like the children of Israel come out of Egypt “equipped for battle”, our
Heavenly Father knows that should we meet the hard battles right away, our
hearts would faint and not last a minute. So He directs us most normally along a
path of lesser resistance, until the strength of age, the wisdom of his Word and
our skill in depending upon His Spirit are more developed. It is long after these
initial seasons of joy and elation at our freedom, that He brings us into the raging
battles we’ve been brought out both to face, and to win. Like Peter, I would say
to you today beloved: “do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon
you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.” (1 Pet.
4:12) Older Saint, He kept these maelstroms until you were mature, and ready to
meet the enemies of the world the flesh and the devil full on in the heat of battle.
Fight on! He has prepared you for this day. And He intends that the victory shall
be His as you fight under the banner of His Cross. You younger Christian – take
note. The day of war is still ahead. You may have found joy in the quick end of
small skirmishes now, but rougher days lie ahead. Watch your elder brothers as
they fly into the fray unafraid, following their Captain, resting in His promises,
and living in the power of His Spirit – with joy and peace.

  1. This is so true. The enemy never takes our triumphs and blessings lying down. Thank God that “greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.” Thanks for the inspiration.
