A PASSION for Fruit

Walk in Wisdom – Gleanings from Scripture

The Law has no power to deal with sin. It can expose it. It can reveal our
helpless estate, but it offers no aides either to mitigating our guilt, nor release
from its penalties. It is a spiritual diagnostic, but provides no cure. Like an X-
ray machine, it can make clear the fracture or the tumor, but it can do no
more. It can tell you need a Doctor, but it cannot BE the Doctor. Thus it is
a “schoolmaster” to bring us to Christ. What then IS the answer to sexual
immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits
of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies and other
things like these? Being yielded up to the indwelling Spirit of God. Living under
the controlling influence of the Holy Spirit. Having the character of Christ
wrought out within us by His own presence. And what this looks like we learn in
Gal. 5, where the Apostle is confronting people who were looking to rules – like
the Law of God – to deal with their sinful inclinations, habits, desires and
actions. The true answer to chastity and sexual purity isn’t a series of external
rules and regulations, it is a heart which desires other things. And this, he
demonstrates in this three-layered “fruit” before us. Love, joy and peace WITH
God, produces patience, kindness and goodness TOWARD others, and
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control IN me. So his secret is – feast your
heart and soul continually on the Love of God in Christ toward you, the joy of
sins forgiven in His blood and the peace with God because of Christ’s sacrifice
on your behalf; and your heart will patient with others as He has been patient
toward you, filled with the kindness you have experienced in Him and
overflowing with goodness toward the fallen Sons of Adam. Together which
increases faithfulness toward the One who is faithful to you, a gentle and mild
disposition, which manifests itself in self-control. In other words, walk in the
Spirit, in the fullness of the Spirit’s revelations of the person and work of Christ,
and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. We don’t need more rules, but
rather to BE ruled, by grace.
