Answering Fools – Part 6 /

Walk in Wisdom – Gleanings from Scripture
From: Prov. 26.4-5 Part 6 – Answering Fools

We’ve been answering a fool according to our two verse text in Proverbs 26.
First, by not buying into his twisted logic, and second, by exploding his foolish
notions by opening to the simple and plain truth as it is taught in the Scriptures.
In fact, each of the matters we’ve discussed thus far would have been settled
easily by our writer had he merely taken even a little time to actually read the
texts he was pulling his comments from in some form of entirety. Alas, he could
not be bothered. For as his questions betray, his is not a mission of finding
truth, but of attempting to obscure and mock it. A fool’s errand for sure. So too
with this last battery of questions. “I have a neighbor who insists on working on
the Sabbath…Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the
police to do it? A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an
abomination…it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can
you settle this? Are there degrees of abomination? I know from Lev. 11.6-8 that
touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean. May I still play football if I
wear gloves? [My friend] also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really
necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to
stone them?…Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair, as
we do with people who sleep with their in-laws?” In every part he both fails to
recognize what belonged to God’s people as statute within Israelitish society,
and/or the moral principles behind each, or simply misquotes and thus mocks
period. But God’s Word has a battery of comments in response to the poor and
malformed questions our poor fool advanced. I leave you and him with these
from the Proverbs: 1:7 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
14:9 “Fools mock at the guilt offering, but the upright enjoy acceptance.”
15:2 “The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools
pour out folly.”
This poor man needs prayer. May God deliver him.
