What Love is This?

Walk in Wisdom – Gleanings from Scripture
Luke 22.28 “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials.”

One reads these words and is reminded of those written about Lot in 2 Pet. 2.
There we read Lot was: “greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked
(for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting
his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard). No doubt, it
was this torment Lot endured which ended up being the great “outcry against
Sodom and Gomorrah” mentioned in Gen. 18.20. So one wonders, how was the
eternally perfect and righteous soul of our Savior tormented as he walked
among us, witnessing and experiencing the fallen state of His beloved mankind,
and the horrors to which we had sunk? What a trial it must have been for Him to
leave the glories of heaven, to set aside His native glory and to be clothed in the
likeness – not merely of human flesh – but sinful, fallen flesh? What a trial it
must have been to live like one under the curse, and yet be spotless, harmless
and undeserving of it in every way? What a trial to be subject to His own
creatures. To be disregarded though He possessed all authority in Heaven and
Earth. To daily be disrespected when all the fullness of the Godhead indwelt Him
bodily: to be constantly contradicted, opposed, misunderstood, mocked,
challenged, disobeyed, disbelieved, hated, plotted against, abused and
ultimately murdered by the very ones He loved and came to save. Every
aspect of the incarnation was a trial. A few years ago I suffered an attack of
gout. When in full swing, the tissue affected had become so sensitive that not
only couldn’t I stand the pressure of a sheet touching it, the moving air from a
cooling fan was too painful to bear. So imagine the Son of God – infinitely
sensitive in refinement and holiness. Once only accustomed to the perfume of
the Heavenly Presence, now accosted by the stench of human filth and
excrement. Once walking upon the clouds, now with feet bruised, bleeding and
covered with dust. Ears that had heard nought but the antiphonal holies of the
seraphim, flooded with the taunts and curses of the most vulgar. Ultimate purity
exposed to total depravity. And why? To seek and to save the lost. What love is
