  • Mother’s Day – 2006

    May 14th, 2006

mother.jpgEvery year, I write a Mother’s Day poem for my Mom. Sometimes they are humorous, other times they are more serious or sentimental.

This year, I went more serious.

I had the extraordinary privilege of being raised in a Christian home. Like Timothy, I can say that the faith which dwelt in my Grandmother and my Mother, I can say dwells in me as well.

    Love you Mom!

  • The Secret Message of Jesus

    May 13th, 2006

mclaren.jpg I was going to write a review of this book, but I was too saddened. And, conflicted over how to approach such a clear departure from the faith. The review/response would have to be larger then the book. And to what end?

As I pondered, a friend of mine, Ben Askins, sent me the following quote from C. S. Lewis on an unrelated subject. As I reflected upon it, I realized, it IS the review of this sad book. Why try to improve upon it?

“All theology of the liberal type involves at some point… the claim that
the real behavior and purpose and teaching of Christ came very rapidly to
be misunderstood and misrepresented by his followers, and has been
recovered or exhumed only by modern scholars.”

    Pray for Brian.

  • II Timothy 1 – A Modest Attempt

    April 28th, 2006

    fan.jpg
I am currently preaching through 2 Timothy.

As is an exercise with me, I try to paraphrase the passage I am working on. This is a modest attempt to capture some of Paul’s glorious counsel to Timothy through the Spirit’s inspiration (to Paul, NOT me).

I hope you find it helpful.

Yesterday I gave you my one-word (in most cases) summaries of the books of the Old Testament. The idea is to help in memorization and being able to quickly digest and keep the stream of redemptive history in mind.

    Today – we’re movin’ on!

  • Some things on my mind.

    April 26th, 2006

As you know, the daily Scripture readings I list here, are the ones we as a Church are reading through, using the Discipleship Journal Bible Reading Plan. So many have commented on how they are enjoying it, and getting exposed to passages they’ve shied away from in the past. Awesome!

Since there are only 25 readings per month, we get a few days to play catch up and today I thought I’d give you just a few things to keep in mind as you are reading.
