  • Prayer doesn’t “work”!

    March 31st, 2006

    prayer.jpg
Reuters carried an article yesterday (which you can read:
    HERE) on a test conducted
in an effort to find out if prayer works.

“”>”The patients in the study at six U.S. hospitals included 604 who were actually prayed for after being told they might or might not be; another 597 patients who were not prayed for after being told they might or might not be; and a group of 601 who were prayed for and told they would be the subject of such prayer.”

The results? “”>”A study of more than 1,800 patients who underwent heart bypass surgery has failed to show that prayers specially organized for their recovery had any impact, researchers said Thursday.”

“In fact, the study found some of the patients who knew they were being prayed for did worse than others who were only told they might be prayed for — though those who did the study said they could not explain why.”

What are Christians supposed to say when we are confronted with “evidence” like this? Does the word DUH! come to mind? It should – and here’s why.

  • FASTING – A Brief Biblical Primer

    March 31st, 2006

    Matt. 6:1-18 & Isaiah 58

Fasting as a topic comes in and out of vogue at various times in the Church. Unfortunately, often, when it does get addressed, the treatments tend toward mystical or superstitious or just plain fiction. It becomes a sort of cosmic arm-twisting – a mystical tool to get God to do what we want.

Our Church had the opportunity each year to conduct a sunrise service Easter Sunday morning at a local cemetery. We usually see several hundred people – many of whom seldom if ever, attended Church the rest of the year. We had an extra burden to have the Gospel proclaimed with unusual power and effectiveness and so we are asked our own folks to fast and pray to that end. That the spiritually dead would be raised through the Gospel, even as we celebrated Christ’s resurrection.

Below, is a VERY brief primer we authored to prepare people for that fast. Perhaps it will be useful for you as well.

Please note this is a SCALED down version of a study I did years ago – but I believe the content can be very helpful. (more…)

Celebrated fine artist Mako Fujimura (His “Christmas Eve” is shown here) has written a very thought provoking article regarding Christians and the arts. You can read it -> HERE (Scroll down to A.R.T. Introduction).

A family in our church posted it on our internet “Connection”, and I responded it to it below.
